Julia and Heidi are a mother & daughter team who started FLINT in 2002 with a dream to open a shop selling beautiful and unusual clothes, homewares, books and fresh flowers and found the ideal location for our venture in the historic county town of Sussex, Lewes. They began with a small shop in a beautiful 15th Century building on the High Street and after a many successful years' trading, moved to a much larger premises, a 14th Century converted church a little way along the road.
After sixteen years of happy trading, with a successful interior design practice and floristry business on the side, they decided it was time for a change and wanting to leave on a high, decided to close the shop doors in 2020. Luckily this was just before the pandemic and so feel rather blessed to have made the decision when they did...
Heidi and her husband moved to an old farmhouse in the country not far from Lewes, and it was there that the next phase in their journey evolved. Taking inspiration from the garden and fields all around the house, they cultivated a cutting garden and began experimenting with botanical dyes and harvesting their own flowers to use in our various floral commissions. A small barn in the garden was turned into a studio and this is where they are now based and where they happily continue to work together on our various projects.
Julia continues to style flowers for all sorts of events and work on our interiors commissions. She also makes paper flowers and has built a following all over the world. Heidi also works as a freelance stylist and is currently working on a book.
Together they host pop ups at our studio and invite customers to shopping events and workshops on everything from pressed flowers to wreath making.
The products they make have sustainability at heart. From the bags they make to the lavender they harvest, everything is done with nature in mind and mindful of the impact on nature.
