Spring flowers are like a breath of fresh air. Today the shop was filled with the sweet scent of the new season. Narcissus, hyacinth, ranunculus, tulips and roses bring a promise of the lighter days ahead and we filled our vases, bottles, pots and urns to the brim. Julia has been busy taking orders for Mother's Day this week and comes back from the market everyday with armfuls of blooms that look amazing just simply plonked in a vase, straight out of their wrappings... Of course, we do make lovely handtied posies and arrangements too, but they're put together in a very naturalistic way, as if you'd gathered them yourself. That's the way we like it. We let the beauty of the flowers speak for themselves. Call in over the next few weeks to see what we have on offer.. Or call us now to place your order for a Mothers Day posy. Our shop is closed from 25th-30th December. We re-open on Tuesday 31st December, 10-4pm. We are closed on New Years Day
I've just got back from an amazing adventure in Kenya hosted by our Norwegian friends at their camp, Basecamp Kenya. You can find the details here - www.basecampkenya.com. One of the many reasons this company is so special, is that they built a camp in a conservancy created in conjunction with the Maasai, land that is leased from the Maasai, and they have named the conservancy 'Naboisho', meaning 'coming together' in Maa.
For the past few months I have been working with the supremely talented Amanda from Wellgreen Lewes - www.wellgreenlewes.com, on a range of natural, therapeutic balms to be stocked at FLINT, which have been inspired by the places I love to visit around the world. Our aim is to bottle the scent of a place, an evocation of a place in a jar....
Kenya being one of my favourite destinations, we had to include it on our list. I took along a bag load of samples on this trip, seeking approval from our Maasai friends Moses and Manfred....
The Kenya balm, yet to be named (it's still early days!), contains Leleshwa which Amanda painstakingly distilled in her workshop. Leleshwa is one of the many important plants to the Maasai which they use as a perfume. This strong, clean smelling plant reminds me of Tea Tree but it's much sweeter, more herby than that. We have combined it with vanilla and coffee among other things, to try and capture the smell out in the savannah.
We have been showing the work of artist Tom Homewood, for a few years now. We love in equal measure, the simplicity and quiet modesty of his drawings and the breathtaking abstract landscapes he has been working on recently. These brilliantly observed drawings and beautiful abstracts inspired by the Sussex landscape have won him many fans far and wide. His latest collection for our Winter Exhibition will feature among other delights, some scenes inspired by one of the many events steeped in Lewes-lore, Bonfire. Please contact us if you'd like more information or if you'd like to see some images of Tom's work in advance of our Private View, which takes place on November 8th 7-9pm.
We're now open online!
A few of our favourites things are now available for you to buy from the comfort of your sofa, wherever you may be in the world...Stock will change regularly, so please do keep checking in for updates...
